SEXUAL REVOLUTION IN RUSSIA
Published in Hardcover by Free Press (April, 1995)
Author: Igor Kon
Average review score:

Solid work of a renowned scholar
I am very happy that such a controversial topic as the sexuality in the contemporary Russia was appoached by the authority in the field of sexuality who has first-hand knowledge of the topic. I happen to know Professor Kon and I am very proud of the acquaintance. Not only he was awarded with numerous academic titles, but he has a rare gift to convey his ideas in a simple, yet precise ways and it is always a pleasure to read his books. James Riodran did a good work - the translation lost nothing as compared to the original. Excellent reference book for everybody interested in the Eastern European social studies.

Great book
I had to read this book for a research paper about the Cold War, and must admit, found a great deal of enjoyment in it. It explains, down to the smalles detail, what took place in terms of aerial reconnaissance in the 1950, and at the same it is neatly divided into small sections so that its easy to find information quickly

Shamanic Worlds: Rituals and Lore of Siberia and Central Asia
Published in Paperback by M.E.Sharpe (January, 1997)
Author: Marjorie Mandelstam Balzer
Average review score:

Very Good!
When this book came out it played an important role in bridging the gap between Russian/Soviet scholarship about shamanism and the western world. The value of this book is increased by the fact that many of the writers come from the cultures about which they are writing. Ms. Mandelstam-Balzer's translation is very readable and always interesting. This book is full of valuable information for readers interested in learning about Siberian shamanic traditions. Shamanic Worlds will be interesting not only to scholars but also to anyone interested in shamanism.

Shattered Peace: The Origins of the Cold War
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (April, 1990)
Author: Daniel Yergin
Average review score:

Still the best account of the origins of the Cold War
Is this book a 'classic'? If it isn't then I don't know what would qualify for the name. A breath of fresh air when it was first released, it quite nicely debunked the existing interpretations of Liberal National, New Left and (rather fratricidally) the earlier Realist historians. It is meticulously researched and easy to read - it deserves a place on the shelf of every person with an interest in the international affairs of the 20th century, especially as it is now within the price range of most buyers.

A Short History of the Russian Revolution

A Short History of the Russian Revolution
If you're interested in learning about what went on in Russia from the overthrow of the Czar to the establishment of a system by the Bolsheviks, then this is definitely the book for you. I would recommend this book to anyone, from a person clueless about the topic up to a historian, because it covers so many different major aspects and of the period, yet explains them well enough also. The main focuses are the February riot, July Days, and Bolshevik Victory in October. A personal account of the February riot is included, which is totally amazing. For most of the book, I couldn't put it down. I had to really push myself through about 20 pages that didn't make sense to me, but certainly a second reading of the book would clear up problems like this.

After completing this book, I would definitely pick up Ten Days That Shook the World by John Reed (an American Journalist who travelled to Russia during the Revolution). This whole book is a personal account that is often referred to in A Short History of the Russian Revolution. Although it doesn't cover the amount of time that the latter book does, it certainly gives you a view of how the individual was treated and the great sense of unorganization and chaos that was going on in Russia during the time. Reed talks about his experiences inside of the Winter Palace, and so many more small accounts that aren't included in "A Short History...". This book also includes many, many speeches given by figures such as Lenin and others in the Congress of Soviets.

In conclusion, I would definitely pick up both of these books if you are interested in this subject.

Siberian Survival: The Nenets and Their Story
Published in Hardcover by Cornell Univ Pr (July, 1999)
Authors: Gail Osherenko, Andrei V. Golonev, and Andrei V. Golovnev
Average review score:

The Nenets survive!
Osherenko and Golonev have created a work that satisfies scientific researchers, sociologists and casual readers alike. The story of the Nenet people is a fine blend of history, folklore, and sharp realism. The assessments come from professionals who have had real experience; understand political dynamics of both the FSU and the world community; and who can apply their findings to view, to some extent, the future of the Yamal. The authors deeply care about the people of the Yamal and their Arctic environment from both personal and scientific perspectives. They supply the reader with an in-depth view of a society that may represent other societies around the Arctic regions. The Nenets' story is unique in one respect but also applies to Arctic regions in general. Read this book to understand a key issue in world politics and international trade. Read this book to understand use of "The Commons". Read this book to understand indigenous peoples and their struggles. Read this book.

The Sinner from Toledo: And Other Stories
Published in Hardcover by Associated Univ Pr (June, 1972)
Author: Anton Pavlovich Chekhov
Average review score:

Hidden Treasure
I found Chekov's book on the last day of my university library clearance sale. It was hidden in a bin cluttered with countless, unremarkable books. After buying it for 10 cents I opened the cover and cracked the frail binding. The copy was over 30 years old.

I became engrossed in the stories and had trouble putting it down (and during final test week!)Chekov was one of the great short story writers of any country at any time.

I felt horrible at the end. I bought this book -worth unspoken amounts- for a dime. I was a thief. Unfortunately sending a check to his family or giving it back to the library (they don't want it) was impossible. So as repayment the only thing I can do is encourage others to pick up this jewel.

A very gifted writer with strong sense of humor
This is a most gifted novelist with natural paintbrush. Every book written by Ignatius was thoroughly reseached before put into writing. If you are keen enough in humor, some of the chapters and paragraghs were the most humorous creation ever written by a novelist! Some readers might find this book somehow not so easy to read along since the Cold War was over and CIA is really and actually in deep shit now. But Ignatius never failed to amazed the readers that he could adjust himself pretty well and fast; he proved it in his recent good book, A FIRING OFFENSE.
